According to 'the experts', writing content (good, unique, new
content) for your blog or website are essential to making your website
easier for customers to find and building your business. And it's true.
But when
outsourcing your writing is not an option, how in the world can you
keep up with
writing enough content?
If you have trouble keeping up with one new blog post per week, then
get ready to trick your brain into being able to pump out perfectly
intelligent sounding articles in about 30 minutes each.
1. Relax. Quit stressing.
This is the first tip on this list because stress is the #1 cause of
writers block. Relax. Whatever it is that you are stressed about can be
managed. No one is perfect right out of the gate. In fact, most of the
experience writers still write the occasional boring article, or
mispell an easy word or miss a post. It's ok, it's probably not going
to bankrupt you overnight.
Do whatever you've got to do to take the stress out of writing content.
2. Make it easy.
You already should have some knowledge of your topic, so make it easy.
You can start by repeating that knowledge in a way that is useful
and/or entertaining for your readers.
A good way to do this is to write a 'tips' article with the top 5-7
tips that your audience should know about your topic. That's one page.
Then you can expand any one of those tips with another article that has
5-7 tips on that subtopic if there is enough information about it.
3. Check your website outline for holes
If you created a website outline to begin with, then review it and
start checking off the pages that you've already created. What's left
to write? Pick the easiest of those topics and start write an article
about it.
If you haven't created a website outline,
a day when you've got writer's block is the best time to buckle down
and do it. It will give you ideas today and get your juices flowing,
and it will also make it easier the next time your mind goes blank and
you don't know what to write.
4. Keep track of new ideas for writing content
As you write content, you may realize that there is a hole
somewhere or there is another article you could write to expand on that
subject.
Keep track of these ideas!
I put mine on a whiteboard so I don't have to open another computer
file and take my attention away from my current article. Whether you
use a notepad and pencil, or a scrap file on your computer
or a whiteboard, keey track of these ideas somewhere and add them to
your website outline for next time.
5. Write a myth-busting article
Identify some common myths related to your topic or line of work.
These are probably the things you talk about to your
friends/family/co-workers after hours and get laughs out of. Describe
the myth and why people believe it.
Then describe the reality and give your readers tips to help them out. This can be a very entertaining kind of article to read.
6. Do something else
One of my greatest writing secrets is taking ample breaks. Writing for
hours in a row is not productive for most people. Doing something other
than writing content will give your brain and eyes a bit of a break,
but more importantly inspiration comes from real life, not a computer
screen. Get away from your desk and come back to it later.
